About

My name is Colin Taira and I established Taira Companies in 2024 to support my search to acquire an existing small business, as well as existing and future ventures.

I am a highly strategic, business-minded professional with over 14 years’ experience in problem solving, operational efficiency and improvement, cost savings, and project management in Corporate Real Estate, Facilities, and Strategic Sourcing supporting Real Estate and Facilities, Marketing and Communications, and Professional Services roles.

A driven self-starter, with a lifelong entrepreneurial spirit, I established and continue to operate two rental properties and a growing niche e-commerce business. I'm now searching for the right existing business to acquire, operate, and grow.

Skills

The ability to produce timely, meaningful results is arguably my strongest skill, and the most difficult to articulate. However, through all of my professional experience and past and current ventures, I've always been able to figure it out and generate success.

I largely attribute this to my analytical and sensible nature. I have the distinct ability to quickly learn about a business or process, understand the drivers, factors, internal and external forces that impact the success of that process, and then identify areas of opportunity, growth, efficiency, and improvement. I like to make things work and work well.

With nearly 25 years' experience in everything from privately owned, family owned, Fortune 500 tech, and private equity companies in a variety of roles that have allowed me to interact all levels of business, learn and implement lean thinking and manufacturing techniques, manage complex projects, and drive organizational change, I have the tenacity, breadth of experience, and sensibility to successfully lead and grow a business.

Experience

Strategic Sourcing Roles

2016 - Present

My experience in Strategic Sourcing and Procurement roles demonstrates my inherent approach to understand the needs of the business and how to best position the business for success today and in the future. Without any formal background in procurement or sourcing, I was recruited specifically because of the highly specific facilities and construction related projects, purchasing, and project management completed in my time at PING Inc.

Sourcing, negotiating, contracting, and performance management all came natural to me and ultimately lead to more prominent roles in sourcing with Fortune 500 technology companies, including establishing the strategic sourcing function to support the global real estate team at PayPal Inc. After two years of successfully building and establishing governance and best practices for the global real estate sourcing, it was my specific ability to "dive into the weeds and figure things out" and how to address them with broad corporate goals in mind, that leadership leaned on as I was taped to manage and lead sourcing for the global marketing and communications team at PayPal Inc, without any prior experience in marketing or communications. Managing up to $1Bn in annual run rate spend, leading and completing several strategic initiatives that had been proposed for the prior 3-5 years, and building best practices for one of the most difficult categories to govern, lead to subsequent positions in Strategic Sourcing as I continued to seek out additional experience and opportunities.

Strategic Sourcing affords you the unique perspective of being engrained in the business and its specific needs, while also exchanging input with the C-level to achieve the broader enterprise goals. It's this holistic experience and strategic thinking that I am seeking to apply as a future operator.

Corporate Real Estate, Facilities, and Construction Roles

2010 - 2016

The self-realization and fruition of my ability to dive in and make a positive impact is most clearly demonstrated in my time in facilities space planning, management, capital improvement project management, and facilities procurement, a field I had not given any thought to prior to my roles at PING Inc. Seeking a new opportunity during a recession meant applying for a role internally at PING that I really didn't know the first thing about.

With the support of a good leader and the intimate dynamics of a family owned company, my runway was vast, and I was able to successfully complete several of the largest capital improvement projects in the then 57 year history of the company. I attended every educational session or resource I could find, taught myself AutoCAD, learned everything I could about commercial construction and FF&E, and gained extensive experience supporting lean manufacturing, industrial equipment procurement and planning, and deploying functional best practices to achieve the highest possible outcomes for production, design engineering and testing, and office efficiency.

All that is to say, I discovered or realized my very practical, pragmatic, highly-efficient, or sensible nature. My ability to dive into the weeds, assess and identify opportunities, and implement change management to drive positive outcomes. This is exactly why I'm now searching for a small business to acquire and operate.
